A sourced referenceWhat is AI visibility?
A neutral, plainly-sourced explanation. AI answer systems increasingly stand between your expertise and the people looking for it. Here's what AI visibility is, what we actually know about how it works, and where the honest limits of that knowledge are.
The one-sentence definition
AI visibility is the degree to which a person, brand, or business can be accurately discovered, understood, referenced, and recommended by AI-powered search and answer systems. It builds on traditional SEO, but also depends on clear entity information, useful original content, verifiable expertise, and corroborating information across the web.
People increasingly ask an AI a direct question instead of scrolling a page of links. When they do, systems like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude synthesize an answer and often name a small set of sources. AI visibility is about being one of those accurately-understood, referenced sources — for the questions your expertise should own.
There's a lot of confident advice circulating about how to achieve this, much of it overstated. So rather than add to the noise, this page keeps three very different kinds of claim apart: what the platforms confirm, what industry research suggests, and what I've observed firsthand building my own sites. Keeping them separate is, itself, good practice — it's the kind of clear, honest signal both people and AI systems can trust.
Tier 1 · What the platforms confirm
- Optimizing for Google's AI features is still SEO. Google has stated its generative AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems — so the fundamentals (crawlable, helpful, original content) still apply.
- No special schema is required to appear in Google's AI features, and structured data does not guarantee a citation. It helps machines understand your entities and content; it isn't a magic switch.
- Other engines read the open web their own way. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude are not governed by Google's guidance and apply their own crawlers and weighting.
Tier 2 · What research and practice suggest
- Answer-forward content wins. Pages that answer a specific question completely and early are easier for AI systems to extract and reference.
- Entities and consistency matter. A clear, consistent identity across your site and the wider web — name, credentials, location, focus — helps AI understand who you are and when to name you.
- Corroboration builds trust. Independent mentions and credentials give AI systems reasons to treat you as a reliable source rather than a self-claim.
Tier 3 · What I've observed firsthand
Building my own 74-page hyperlocal authority site, the pattern was consistent: specific, firsthand answers that no national site bothers to produce got picked up fastest. A licensed Baltimore appraiser explaining why a CHAP tax credit moves value on a particular block is something Zillow and a generalist model simply can't replicate — and that specificity is exactly what earned an AI Overview citation within 72 hours.
Being good isn't enough anymore. You have to be discoverable, trusted, and recommendable.
